Is there a tune for the break of bread at dawn,

A song of the sock, the old flannel shirt, the unshined shoes?

Is there a hymn moving with me as I go dark among our rooms

To cupboards, oranges and spoons?

Having held you before the clock sprang, yes,

My palm raised to your effulgent breast,

Smoothing hip and thigh, inspiring sweet flutes

And cymbals to begin their play.

I hear players rocking rhythms

In their cemented skins.

Streets, traffic, factories, vendors

Merge their voices in my ward.
